Reid State Park

With a forecast of 86º and sunny, we planned a trip to Reid State Park in Georgetown, our first beach trip this year! We got up early to leave and got there around 10:00. Coincidentally, Amber and Nick had planned a trip to the beach that day, too, and also wanted to go to Reid. We met them there and sat on Todd's Point for the first time. Seth, Amber, and Nick played frisbee on the sand while Chelsea napped on the blanket. We soaked up the sun for 5 hours, then decided to head home.

We stopped by The Taste of Maine Restaurant in Woolwich to look at the osprey nest with babies that was featured in the news a few weeks ago. A mother osprey had made a nest ontop of one of the poles in their parking lot, which is surrounded by salt marsh. The osprey laid eggs in April and two chicks were born just a few weeks ago. The restaurant planted a camera over the nest to show restaurant guests a live video feed while they wait to be seated. We watched the mother and chicks, checked out their gift shop, and bought a little kitchen magnet :o) Seth and I had gone there last year on our way home from camping on Hermit Island late one night last summer. We loved the rustic downeast Maine feel that the restaurant offered. We promised ourself we would stop there for dinner when we go camping at Hermit Island again in a couple mouths.

It wasn't until we got home that we realized we are burnt to a crisp! But we don't even care... we had such a great day, it was so worth it!

Acadia National Park

To celebrate Chelsea's birthday weekend, we went to Acadia National Park to sight see and hike! This is one of our favorite places, having been our first trip we took together as a couple in 2008. We've been a few times since, most recently for a weekend in September when we hiked the a 5k marathon for the MDI Boys & Girls club.

This time, we left early on Sunday morning, with a forecast for clear blue skies and 80º, one of the warmest days yet this year. The closer we got to the coast, the windier it got outside. Acadia was VERY windy and felt more like 60º, but the skies were beautiful and clear. We stopped at the look at Precipipe Trail, a 1000 ft high cliff. The mountain is roped off for the summer months this year because endangered peregrine falcon are nesting on the cliff sides! We went to Thunder Hole, which was inactive at that time. We made a stop at Jordan Pond, hoping to find a hike nearby. The pond was so pretty - very small and was shallow, and was surrounded by mountains. We walked on the trails that go around Jordan Pond, and branched out to another mountain trail leading up to Pemetic Mountain. The beginning of the hike was flat, well groomed, and through the woods. Eventually it turned into steep ledges that felt like lasted forever! The top was so windy, it was hard to hold up a camera without being blown away! The views, as all views are in Acadia, were breathtaking and very rewarding.

Pemetic Mountain
Elevation: 1,234 feet
Prominence: 1,000 feet
Length: 1.0 miles
4th highest mountain in Acadia National Park

We took a scenic, long way around MDI on our way home so that Seth could stop to fish in a small pond in Southwest Harbor. A great day :)
